The Mustangs got a big measure of revenge Wednesday, sweeping Sharon 25-15, 25-20, 26-24. A 3-1 home loss to the Eagles on Oct. 15 ruined any realistic chance the Mustangs had of making the postseason.

Kaitlin McCarthy had seven kills and three blocks, Nicole Butts added three kills and two blocks while Shannon Reen had five digs to help Norwood improve to 7-12.

Last Thursday, Norwood lost 25-15, 25-23, 25-10 to visiting Walpole. Kelly Duggan had three aces and a block in the match.

Kelly Duggan leaves her feet on a return in Wednesday's season-opening match against Milton.

A 1-17 record a year ago meant there was nowhere to go but up for the Norwood High volleyball team. After a 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-13, 15-13) loss to Milton in the season opener on Wednesday, it was apparent that the Mustangs had already started to work their way in that direction.

Against a team that swept them 3-0 in both meetings a year ago, Norwood looked solid for much of the way, playing very well in the first and fourth sets, while often times beset by the little mistakes in the second and third.

"Their communication was better than I’ve seen it, they were talking, calling all the balls," said new coach Paul Nimblett, who slides over a seat after serving as an assistant to Lauren Coville last year. "Our serve receive was really good, I don’t think a lot of serves dropped.

"I know we can hit the ball, but I feel like on defense we weren’t getting as good of a pass as we could to be able to put it down."

Nimblett said the number of service errors was a cause for concern and that tightening up the little miscues like net violations and hitting into the net will go a long way for the team.

This year’s squad is an experienced group with seven seniors returning, the bulk of which saw significant action. Norwood lost just three to graduation, but will be without Amy Duggan, an elite athlete who transferred to Noble and Greenough after a promising freshman season. Among the key returners are captains Shannon Reen, an outside hitter, and Kaileen Spaulding, a setter.

"Spaulding, she’s probably one of the best setters I’ve coached because she’s really good helping the girls out on the floor, understanding where the girls like their sets. She’s also a big advocate of talking and, I feel, she has a really good serve.

"Shannon is kind of a ringleader on the court, when they bring it in after every play, whether it’s a miss, a point or what have you, she’s going to bring them together and basically move on."

Also expected to see extended time on the floor are senior Kaitlin McCarthy and Amanda Springer, both middle hitters, and senior Gianna Pugliano, an outside hitter. Senior Kelly Duggan plays on the right side, junior Emily Clifford is a second option at setter and solid on the service line and senior Anna Shirosky is the libero.

Norwood rolled in the opening set, but lost the next two close, including failing to hold on to an early lead in the third after Spaulding ripped off nine straight service points.

The Mustangs forced a fifth set with a convincing win in the fourth.

In the final set, the Wildcats jumped out to a 7-2 lead, before Norwood tied it at 11 on a kill from Reen. Knotted at 13, Norwood was whistled for a key net violation, giving the hosts match point and Milton was able to secure the victory.

Spaulding had five kills and four aces to go with 26 assists. Reen added 11 kills and Clifford had four aces.

The Mustangs have their home opener Friday (4 p.m.) against Brookline.

Mustangs take Dedham volleyball in five sets
Thursday, 30 September 2010 19:24

After almost seeing their
hopes for a win vaporize in a
two-set rally, the Norwood
Mustangs (1-5) fought back last
week with their own rally to
defeat their Dedham rivals 3-2,
to claim their first win of the
season.
The series came pretty close
to devolving into a 3-1 set loss,
when the Lady Mustangs
battled back from the brink of
defeat to conquer their rivals in
five sets, (27-25, 19-25, 20-25,
25-23, 15-7)
“I think the girls needed a
win under their belts to gain
some confidence,” said firstyear
coach Lauren McNally.
“From here they know that
they’re a good, strong team and
that they deserve to win.
They’ve worked hard for it.”
Norwood looked strong to
begin the game, taking an early
lead in the first set. Despite the
Marauders fighting back, when
faced with 25-25 tie, the Mustangs
game through on a pair
of successful serves to take the
first set 27-25.
Dedham struck back in the
next set, starting off the scoring
and never giving up the
lead, 25-19.
Whether it was fatigue or
loss of focus, the Lady Mustangs
struggled against the
Dedham attack.
“The excitement to come to
play is always there and I think
sometimes it gets a little bit
slower in the second and third
games,” said McNally. “We
can’t let that comfort come, we
have to keep pushing the entire
time.”
In the third set, Dedham
continued their onslaught, starting
off with a 4-0 lead.
With Lauren Duggan at the
back corner, Norwood was able
to serve its way into a tighter
5-4 position. Dedham remained
in the lead, but Norwood kept
coming back to make it a fight
for the Lady Marauders.
Despite Duggan’s frequent
blocks at the net, Norwood was
unable to overcome the point
deficit in the third set, submitting
to Dedham 25-20.

As the fourth set began,
Dedham responded to
Norwood’s first two scores, to
take a 10-4 lead. The lead widened
to 18-11. With defeat
looming, the Lady Mustangs
regrouped and began responding
with a series of attacks.
Christine Wiggandt led the
way to victory with four consecutive
scoring serves, ultimately
pushing the Lady Mustangs
into the lead for a 25-23
set win, tying up the series.
From there, the battle was
won. Norwood handily dispatched
the Lady Marauders
15-7 in the tiebreaker set.
The team will be preparing
for a showdown against a tough
team this Friday when they host

Wellesley at 4 PM.

The state tourney hopes for the Norwood volleyball team ended last week, but that won’t take away the effort the Mustangs made in their push to get there, especially against Wellesley last week in a must-win game against one of the kingpins in the Bay State Conference. It took the visiting Raiders five games to defeat the ‘Stangs, who at one point led two games to one, at the Savage Center. Even if Norwood had won the match, it still would have had to beat Walpole next Wednesday to qualify for the postseason.

"I am very proud of the way the girls played competing with one of the top teams in the league," Norwood head mentor Tim Linehan said, after the Raiders defeated the Mustangs, 3-2.

To even get the chance for the meaningful game against Wellesley, Norwood had to beat BSC Carey Division foe Needham earlier in the week, and the host Mustangs came through with solid 3-1 victory over the Rockets, reaching a milestone of sorts.

"It was the first win over a Carey Division team [this season], and the first time this senior class has ever beaten a Carey team," Linehan said.

"We had a balanced attack led by Steph Perry, Tahira Gibson, and Lauren Duggan, [and] Carly Juckett played excellent in the back row," the coach added.

The Blue and Gold followed that win with a 3-0 win over visiting non-conference foe Arlington. Perry and Nikki Cignarella struck for 16 and 10 kills, respectively. Migena served a whopping 10 aces, and Carly Blais posted a career-high 28 assists.
