The Norwood High softball team entered Natick on Wednesday with a share of the Bay State Conference Herget title already in its back pocket. The Mustangs left leaving no doubt as to who is the division’s best team.

A pair of big innings powered another solid pitching performance from senior Jill Shepherd as Norwood sewed up the outright crown with a 7-1 victory over the second-place Redhawks. The Mustangs improved to 14-3 overall and 12-2 in the BSC, earning them a fourth Herget championship in the last five years after Dedham ended their three-year run at the top last spring.

"It means a lot for us because people had their doubts about us," said Norwood senior captain Jessie Gorman of the crown. "To get it back show how much we have improved, how much we wanted and how much effort has gone into it."

Gorman helped get the Mustangs started in the first inning, belting a two-run double to the opposite field in right, then coming home on a Kelly Duggan groundout for a quick 3-0 lead for Norwood.

Natick, which edged the Mustangs 5-4 in nine innings in the first meeting, threatened to get the runs back in the bottom half, loading the bases with one out on a pair of walk and a single. But shortstop Makenna Lane reacted perfectly to her right to snare a on a line drive off the bat of Lauren Crowley and calmly flipped to third for an inning-ending double play.

Norwood padded the lead with a four-run fourth. Erin Garczynski leadoff with a double, the second of her three hits and the day, and scored on an RBI single from Lane. Duggan kept the inning going with a two-out single, and the Mustangs tacked on three more runs on a throwing error, a run-scoring triple to deep center by Shepherd and an RBI single from Flynn to make it 7-0.

"The kids deserve it, they have worked hard," said Norwood coach Carol Savino. "We were a good team a year ago, we just ran into some tough luck with injuries. If we stay healthy from this point forward, we could do some damage."

Natick’s only run came in a bizarre sequence in the fourth. With Redhawks on first and second and one out, batter Meghan Pini and both baserunners though ball three was four and started trotting to the next base. Pini was sent back to the plate but Norwood realized a split second too late to get the runner at third, and both moved up.

Bouncing Back from Injuries

NORWOOD — Carol Savino has coached the game, in various positions and communities, for 50 years, the last four at the helm of the varsity softball program at Norwood High.

Two weeks ago, she realized that she had a pretty special group.

It was a cold and rainy Friday afternoon, the final hours before spring vacation, and her Mustangs were not scheduled to play a game until the following Wednesday.

So the 68-year-old Savino, normally a stickler for detailed, three-hour practices, made the workout optional.

“They said they wanted to practice,” Savino said. “Same thing with Monday [Patriots Day]. I told them straight: ‘You can have Monday off. Or you can practice. It’s up to you.’ And not one of them said they wanted Monday off.

“Their vacation was no vacation. It was all softball. And yet I had no real grumblings. That says a lot about the kids and what they’re looking for.”

That commitment, Savino contends, is a big reason why Norwood started the season winning six of its first eight games. Two nine-inning losses aside, a convenient mix of senior leadership and talented underclassmen — and the ensuing camaraderie — has the Mustangs in a good position to capture another Bay State Conference Herget Division crown after finishing fourth in 2012.

This edition of Mustangs is much healthier than last spring.

Shortstop Makenna Lane missed nearly half of the 2012 season with a bad back. Pitcher Jill Shepherd had tendinitis in her right (throwing) shoulder and a couple of badly pulled muscles. First baseman Jess Gorman was out most of the season with wrist and ankle injuries sustained during the basketball season.

A year later, though, those three are senior captains — along with outfielder Kelly Duggan and designated player Sydney Cherella — and key cogs in the Mustang machine.

Gorman is a staple at first base, while Shepherd has been the victor in all six Norwood wins, including a no-hitter against Brookline on April 4.

Shepherd, who will pitch at the University of Massachusetts Boston next season, features mainly a fastball and changeup, but can also mix in a drop ball.

“When it’s on, it’s a nasty pitch,” Savino said.

The 5-foot-7 righthander can hit her spots and get outs, according to Savino, and when she runs into problems, she knows there will be at least one teammate behind her, both figuratively and literally: Lane.

Lane is among the team batting leaders with a .478 average, while playing a smooth shortstop.

On Tuesday afternoon, she turned nearly every double play, some of them barehanded, during simulated infield practice — the team was doing the best it could in a gymnasium that soggy evening — and according to Savino she often takes the time to instruct the younger players on how to read fly balls.

“You don’t have to watch very long to see how good she is. As a freshman I just took one look and said, ‘Oh my gosh,’?” Savino said.

“Having been injured, she felt bad last year. She worked through a lot. She played when she should not have because she felt she was important to the team. And she was right — she is.”

Lane is still battling two herniated discs, but after last season left a bad taste in her mouth, she decided to play through it as much as she can.

“It’s better than it was last year,” Lane said. “It still hurts, but I just have to suck it up.”

Should that pain become too much to bear, there is a contingency plan in place — Lane has been working with freshman second baseman Alyssa Chamberlain on the art of playing shortstop. Duggan (.524) will likely take over in the circle if Shepherd is unable to throw.

This season, Savino has depth with a number of talented newcomers. There are six freshmen on the roster, including the Michael twins — Kasey (.438), the starting left fielder, and Kristina, a reserve infielder. Their older brother, Kenny, is the ace of the Norwood baseball team.

A pair of sophomores, third baseman Kristen Flynn (.478) and catcher Erin Garczynski (.500), are also key cogs of an attack scoring nearly eight runs per game and a sound defensive unit.

“She has a gun for an arm,” Savino said, referencing Garczynski’s 1.6-second pop time. “She’s a very athletic kid.”

The result is a highly competitive Mustang team, a squad with much higher hopes than last year’s 10-9 edition. It’s a team with a hope — a reasonable hope — to recapture the Herget Division crown, which Norwood won three times in a row before Dedham won the title last year.

The Mustangs want to prove that was a mere anomaly.

“I hope it goes back to normal,” Lane said.

“I think we work harder than any team in this league, so we have no reason to not go back to winning.”

The Norwood High softball team has already proved to be a vastly different squad from a year ago, even with most of the same core players on the roster.

Ravaged by injuries last spring as Dedham ended their string of Bay State Conference Herget Division titles at three straight, the Mustangs have posted wins in their first four games, including impressive victories this week over the defending champion Marauders and Braintree to seize the early lead in the division race.

"We are looking to get the league back," said Norwood senior captain Makenna Lane. "We are working hard, we have three hour-long practices, so everyone is work hard so were hoping its going to be a good season."

Senior Jill Shepherd has picked up the win in the circle in all four contests, including a mercy-rule shortened no-hitter against Brookline as she faced one over the minimum with nine strikeouts in a 10-0 win.

Shepherd was among the many key Mustangs that missed significant time last year but are back healthy this season, a group that included fellow seniors Lane and Jessie Gorman.

"This team has a lot more upside than a year ago because, knock on wood, we are not fighting injuries and we have five seniors that are great leaders, they really care," said Norwood coach Carol Savino.

Norwood will be without standout junior Emily Kelly this season, however, as she has decided to concentrate on hockey, according to Savino.

Lane had the big blow in Monday’s 6-2 win in Dedham, blasting a two-run homer over the fence in left-center during a pivotal four-run third inning. The star shortstop, who plans to play at Florida Gulf Coast University next year, anchors a young infield that includes sophomores Kristen Flynn and Katie O’Donnell manning the corners at third and first respectively, and freshman Alyssa Chamberlain at second.

Norwood is young at catcher as well but blessed with plenty of talent in sophomore Erin Garczynski, who established herself as a force at the plate and behind it in her debut season. She’s picked up where she left off this year, stroking a two-run single in Wednesday’s 7-0 win over Braintree while also picking off a pair of runners on the basepaths.

In addition to Shepherd, Lane and Gorman, fellow seniors Kelly Duggan and Sydney Cherella will also play big roles. Gorman in right and Duggan in center make up two-thirds of the outfield, with Cherella settling into the designated player spot in the early going. Duggan had an RBI single against Dedham and two-run single against the Braintree out of the No. 8 spot, lengthening the Mustang lineup.

Left fielder Casey Michael joins Chamberlain as one of two freshmen to earn starting spot, with Norwood utilizing her speed near the top of the order. The Mustangs have carried as many as six freshmen for games so far this season, including Casey’s twin sister Kristina.

"We all get along very well, so we have good chemistry," said Lane. "Everyone is a hard worker and we work together pretty well for a team that has a lot of new kids on it."

After falling down 1-0 in the first to Dedham on Monday, the Mustangs got a two-run triple from Katie O’Donnell and the two-run shot from Lane in the third to go ahead for good.

Dedham added one more in the bottom of the third, but Norwood answered with two in the fourth on RBI singles from Duggan and Garczynski. That was plenty for Shepherd, who struck out five and walked four.

Shepherd was even sharper against the Wamps, allowing just two hits and three walks while fanning nine.

"Jill’s a good pitcher, she not an overpowering pitcher, but she can hit her spots and her changeup can be effective," said Savino. "She doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts, but she can get them when you need them, which is key."

Norwood took control with four in the fourth. The Mustangs pushed the first two across on three straight Braintree errors, then Garczynski drove home two more by stinging a single to left.

The Mustangs made it 5-0 on a RBI single from Flynn in the third, and tacked on the final two in fifth when Duggan singled in a pair.

"They played great today, honestly," said Savino. "The bottom line is we didn’t make any mistakes."

Just as the season reaches it’s most important juncture, the lineup for the Norwood High softball team is starting to round into form.

In her first full game back from a right ankle injury suffered during the basketball season, junior Jess Gorman knocked in a pair of runs to help the Mustangs earn a 4-0 win at Walpole, denying the rival Rebels a piece of the Bay State Conference Herget Division title.

Norwood finishes 9-7 in the league and heads into the Division 1 South draw at 10-8 overall. Softball tournament pairings will be announced on Tuesday.

Freshman Katie O’Donnell blanked Walpole for the second time this year, scattering seven hits and four walks while fanning five. She did not have a 1-2-3 inning, but the Rebels were unable to get much in the way of solid contact against her, the best being a deep foul ball down the left field line by Lauren Regan with two on and two outs in the fourth with the Mustangs already in front 3-0.

O’Donnell regrouped from the blast to get the Rebel leadoff batter to ground to shortstop to end an inning that started with runners at first and second and no outs.

The Rebels had runners in every inning, but stranded 10 by going just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Norwood grabbed a run in the first against Walpole hurler Stephanie Sem on back-to-back one-out singles by Melissa Chisholm (3-for-4, 2 runs) and Makenna Lane (2-for-4, run) and a two-out grounder off the bat of Gorman that went through the legs of shortstop Bridget Nicholson, allowing Chisholm to come around and score.

Gorman, who was the designated player as she is still unable to play in the field, plated Chisholm again in the third on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Jill Shepherd, who played right field as her pitching duties have been curtailed by a shoulder injury, singled up the middle to bring Lane home for a 3-0 lead.

Gorman capped the scoring in the fifth with a base hit to left that scored Sabrina Gaita, who was pinch running for Lane.

“As long as we hit the ball, we’ll be all set,” said Gorman of the Mustangs’ postseason chances after the Mustangs banged out eight hits against Sem and took full advantage of the two errors the Rebels committed.

The win over Walpole snapped a modest two-game losing streak as the Mustangs lost 7-3 to Natick on Monday despite a double and triple from Erin Garczynski. Norwood only mustered two hits in an 11-1 defeat to Bishop Feehan on Saturday.

Norwood 7, Dedham 6 (11 inn.): Herget road still runs through Norwood

It took them 11 innings, but the Norwood High softball team has put the changing of the guard in Bay State Conference on hold.

After losing a two-run lead to Dedham in the seventh inning, the Mustangs battled back twice from one-run in the deficits in extra frames, including in the 11th when junior Sabrina Gaita’s RBI single plated Emily Kelly with the winning run in a rollercoaster 7-6 victory.

“We had our chances, so did they, but it didn’t matter because the game was well-played,” said Norwood coach Carol Savino. “They were undefeated and we are playing with our backs against the wall. We are bringing up freshmen because we are the walking wounded, so I thought they played well.”

The win pulled the three-time defending Herget Division champions even with Dedham atop the standings at 3-1.

Norwood fell down 6-5 in the 11th when a two-out error scored Meaghan Paton, who had tripled off junior starter Jill Shepherd. The Mustangs got a break when Dedham failed to push across an insurance run when a short flare to the outfield by Katie Nosky fell in with a runner on second.

Mary St. Cyr followed with sinking liner to left, but Gaita charged in to make a shoestring catch to end the threat and set the stage for her heroics in the bottom half of the inning.

Norwood wasted no time tying it back up off Brooke Sheehan, who like counterpart Shepherd went the distance. Erin Garcyznksi led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk, stole second and third and came around on Emily Kelly’s single to left.

An error and walk loaded the bases with no outs, but Sheehan, who had fanned three straight with the winning run on third in the ninth, nearly pulled another escape job. The right-hander got a force at the plate for the first out and fly ball to left for the second. But down 0-2 in the count, Gaita punched a ball up the middle to drive home Kelly for the victory.

“It was nerve-wracking, because I have never really punched before,” said Gaita of the abbreviated swing that brought in the winner. “I was in shock, I didn’t know it was going to go through.”

Norwood, still without three starters in the lineup due to injury, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Kelly doubled in Melissa Chisholm and was bunted in by Shepherd. Chisholm had four hits and the day and scored a pair.
